Examples of an eco-sustainable home include the use of natural, recyclable and low environmental impact materials that are safe for health. In recent decades, eco-sustainable homes have become the symbol of a true lifestyle: the watchwords for green construction are energy saving, recycling, and redevelopment.
From this new vision, architects and designers around the world have indulged in searching for the most imaginative and functional solutions to build the perfect eco-friendly home. From Austria to France, the projects have been built with natural materials and are powered by renewable energy, fully respecting the surrounding landscape.
Prepare to be amazed: in this article, we will present the 5 most eco-friendly homes in the world!
1. Water Tower Home, England
Tom Dixon, a designer known for his work with recycled materials, purchased an old water tower on the outskirts of London in the early 2000s. He had a very clear plan: recycle old materials to build an eco-sustainable home.
After covering the entire building with wooden walls, Dixon decided to use the power of the water to regulate the internal temperature, thanks to an ingenious arrangement of the pipes. You can also rent the Water Tower Home for an eco-friendly holiday in the capital city of London!
2. Vogel House, Switzerland
The house designed by architects Diethelm & Spellman overlooks the typical Swiss mountain landscape. This is a splendid example of an eco-friendly wooden house: with its two floors and horizontally extending structure, the Vogel House is covered in silver plaster combined with rough larch panels.
This minimizes the temperature range, and thanks to the very compact structure of the house, heat loss is kept to a minimum. The sloping roof, also covered with an insulating material, is fully equipped with solar and photovoltaic panels.
3. Bamboo House, France
Just over 18 km from Paris, the Bamboo House is inspired by the typical two-story barns of the area. Karawitz Architecture's project, in fact, is a replica of the architecture of the past: over the structure of the ecological wooden house, the urban planners decided to add a cladding of untreated bamboo canes. The sloping roof, however, is covered with solar thermal collectors that provide most of the water for the house. The north side is closed to limit energy loss, while the south side is open to enjoy as much sunlight as possible.
4. Home for Life, Denmark
The project was born in Denmark, during a study on eco-sustainable homes around the world: Danish engineers are committed to creating zero CO2 emission homes. The house was created to demonstrate to everyone how a healthy and eco-sustainable lifestyle is possible, thanks to careful design.
Home for Life is an ecological house designed to take full advantage of solar energy: it takes advantage of it actively, to create electricity and heat, and passively, with natural lighting that makes the rooms more pleasant and comfortable.
5. Bosco Verticale, Milan
A futuristic project is born in Milan, which is undoubtedly among the most eco-friendly homes in the world. In the two buildings near Porta Nuova, Boeri Studio has demonstrated how architecture can unite different species in the same place. In addition to humans, the towers are home to thousands of trees growing directly on the porcelain stoneware walls, and hundreds of birds building their nests among the branches.
The green curtain surrounding the buildings regulates humidity, absorbs carbon dioxide and fine dust, and produces oxygen. This creates an internal microclimate that has no harmful effects on the environment, thanks to the collaboration between the architects and the botanists responsible for the project.
Two buildings that demonstrate - like the other projects we've seen - that it is now possible to find eco-friendly and functional homes for every need... or make them greener with houseplants and a nice well-kept garden.
