The topic of sustainability is increasingly relevant: we are all aware of how fundamental it is to reduce our environmental impact, both outside and inside the home. But how can we make the construction of our home truly eco-sustainable?

We at Casavo have collected 10 green ideas for the home that will help you make your savings a positive contribution to the planet, day after day.

1. Sustainability starts with energy efficiency

If you are buying or renovating a home, now is the right time to carry out energy efficiency measures that allow you to consume less energy (and, at the same time, reduce your bills).

A few examples? Improve insulation by installing a thermal insulation, install a photovoltaic system to produce electricity and switch to underfloor heating with radiant panels, more eco-efficient and less expensive - and also useful in summer, for cooling and saving on air conditioning.

2. Energy-efficient household appliances

To improve energy efficiency and have a greener home, you can take advantage of the Appliance Bonus, also valid in 2022! – and buy new machinery.

Large household appliances, such as ovens and refrigerators, with a high energy class (from A and above) consume less energy for the same performance: this reduces the impact on the environment... and on your wallet!

3. Building and renovating with non-toxic materials

We don't always pay attention, but even the finishes in our homes can be more or less eco-sustainable. Choose non-toxic materials that emit small quantities of chemicals that could be dangerous to your health.

For example, if you're thinking of painting your home, do it with water-based paints: the smell isn't bothersome, and the home environment will be healthier and more comfortable.

4. Eco-sustainable furnishings for a green home

Did you know that furnishings can also help you have an eco-sustainable home? In this area, you have a wide range of choices: you can reuse old furniture, refurbished in full Earthy Boho style, or opt for furnishings made by companies that follow the principle of upcycling, that is, they build them with recycled materials.

Finally, for both furniture and objects and accessories, choose those created with 100% recyclable materials, which can be disposed of once worn out. Not only wood, a true evergreen, but also bamboo, cork, and aluminum—just to name a few.

5. Plants that improve life

Not just eco-sustainable furnishings: decorations are also useful for making your home green. Among the many houseplants you can find on the market, you can in fact select those that have a positive impact on the environment and your health.

A few examples? The sanseveria, with its long, tapered leaves, and the orchid, with its enchanting flowers, are both perfect in the living room and, above all, in the bedroom. They are in fact capable of absorbing pollutants from the environment and producing oxygen throughout the night.

6. The right lights for an eco-sustainable home

Among the artificial light sources, LED bulbs are the most suitable for a green home. In addition to being longer-lasting, they are also more energy-efficient. and this means having to dispose of fewer used bulbs - they are also able to generate a lot of light while dispersing less heat than traditional lighting. In other words, they consume less energy and consumption, in true eco-sustainable style!

7. Curtains, an unexpected ally

And what about natural light? Certainly precious, depending on how it is managed, it can prove to be a friend or foe of sustainability. Curtains play a fundamental role in this. First of all, it is a good idea for all windows and French windows to have them, and preferably for them to be thick. This way, you just have to pull them when it's too sunny outside to prevent excessive heat from entering and consequently reduce the use of the air conditioner.

8. Save water? Yes, you can!

A green home doesn't waste resources: remembering to turn off the heating and water jets when they're not needed - for example, while brushing your teeth or soaping yourself in the shower - is certainly an excellent first step, but you can do even more.

Install dual flush sanitary systems - which use different amounts of water depending on the need - and fit aerator valves on all the taps. This way, even when you run the water, you significantly reduce the flow rate and therefore consumption.

9. How to clean a green home

Do you want to be truly sustainable every day? Then say: Say goodbye to detergents contained in plastic bottles and synthetic sponges that cannot be recycled. Even cleaning the house can have a very low impact on the environment, with minimal costs and effort.

Nowadays, in fact, there are many biodegradable products, both liquid and solid. For liquid ones, we recommend finding a trusted store that sells them in bulk: you can bring your own bottles to refill and you will not produce additional waste. Instead of the sponge, use the luffa, and do away with disposable paper towels in favor of rags and dishcloths that can be washed after use.

10. Take care of yourself, in total sustainability

Finally, among the green ideas for the home, you can't miss biodegradable and possibly plastic-free personal care products. From solid shampoo to hand soap, through body creams contained in tins and washable makeup remover pads. There are no excuses anymore: the market offers so many possibilities that anyone can make their contribution by reducing their environmental impact.
